As a Transit Planning Technician, you will design and implement temporary detours for Calgary Transit (CT) services to ensure continuity of service and customer convenience during events that require road and stop closures. You will interpret road closure plans from Mobility and third-party contractors and negotiate changes to minimize the impact on CT service. You will also support asset management efforts ensuring customer amenities are in place in accordance with CT standards. Primary duties include:
  • Respond to planned and unplanned service disruptions impacting CT operations.
  • Plan optimum detours that accommodate large vehicles, reduce operating impact, and minimize impact on CT operators and customers. 
  • Work with CT communications to develop messaging for Calgary Transit operations, customers, and other interested parties. 
  • Create a variety of maps and communication materials using graphic design software.
  • Collect and verify asset locations and information, data entry and database sustainment to ensure asset management data is current and can be relied on for analysis.
  • Maintain customer and Council requests for placement of CT benches and shelters, prioritize installation of these amenities, based on data including but not limited to ridership.
  • Use geographic information systems (GIS) to assist in planning detours and maintain data in the GIS database. 
  • Collect information from customers, field staff and field investigations to identify work to be completed in order to support maintenance of CT assets.
  • Record and input data for workorders and contact the correct work group to ensure completion. 
Qualifications 
  • A completed 2 year diploma in Planning, Transportation, Engineering, or a related field and at least 1 year of experience in areas such as planning and designing detour routes and using specialized computer applications.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Experience working with GIS and Adobe Creative Suite are required. 
  • Experience using Giro Hastus is considered an asset. 
  • Success in this role requires the ability to think critically, work in a fast-paced environment, seek out information/clarification from multiple people, and collaborate, a customer focused individual will be successful in this role. 
Working Conditions: Office environment with some site visits required.
Pre-employment Requirements 
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
